Summary: Keane’s latest LP, with it’s slick 80s-esque, upbeat sound, mixed with slower moving ballads, make it one of my personal favorites of 2008.
The Lowdown: Keane is back with a brand new album, titled Perfect Symmetry. Not being too familiar with their previous work, I had no idea what to expect when I started listening to this album for the first time. Previously, the only song I had ever heard from this band was Is it Any Wonder?, and I thought that was a solid song with a unique sound.
Perfect Symmetry’s opening track, Spiralling, opens with a very 80s-esque bit, and gives an instant view that the band was going for a more retro style with their new work. As the album progresses, you’ll continue to hear more of these sounds. With many other bands trying this technique with their new albums, one would think that it would get old after a while–fortunately, that is not the case for Keane, who was able to pull it off in near-perfect fashion.
You’ll also hear a lot more of the slower-paced ballads that I personally enjoy. The band does an outstanding job of providing a good mix within.
The lyrics are well written here, as well. I think the tracks Spiralling, You Haven’t Told Me Anything, and Perfect Symmetry are my favorites throughout, though a good majority of the songs are very interestingly written.
If you are at all familiar with Keane and their previous albums, you will most certainly not be disappointed with Perfect Symmetry. Even if you aren’t familiar with the band, you should be able to enjoy the band’s outstanding blend of retro, stylish, and just flat out fun.
The Score: I gave Perfect Symmetry an “Amazing!” score of 93%. Keane made an amazing album with a great mix of the retro, outstanding lyrics, and epic sounds throughout. Definitely give this album a listen. I don’t think you’ll regret it!
